UBC023 - Linda Byrne

Education, design and Interdisciplinary collaboration

Linda Byrne is an independent editorial designer with a focus on the built environment and cultural sectors. Based at the Hithe building in Rotherhithe, she has been the art director of The RIBA Journal since 2016 and regularly collaborates on publications with RIBA Publishing.

A senior lecturer at Kingston School of Art, Linda’s research explores the evolution of publishing and book forms. She is a studio member of the London Centre for Books Arts where she is developing “Swimming Volumes” a self-published series using the architecture and aesthetics of swimming to explore book forms and print processes.

In our conversation, Linda shares her journey as a designer and educator, reflecting on the intersection of teaching and practice and the evolving role of technology in creativity. We explore the value of interdisciplinary collaboration, mentorship and community in design education, while highlighting the challenges faced by new graduates in the ever-evolving design industry.

We touch on personal joys like running, the balance between creativity and commercialism and the importance of embracing change to focus on what truly matters.

Along with Algy and Mark, Linda is someone we met in the early days of Run Dem Crew. The fact that we’ve now recorded conversations with 3 of our friends fromt here shows how meaningful this period of time was for us.

It was lovely to reconnect with Linda, and we really enjoyed how her calmness in this conversation brought out a different side to us. It’s clear to see how she is able to move easily between design, education and her other passions supporting people along the way.

Unorthodox Blend Conversations
An unorthodox blend of disciplines and undisciplines. This is how we used to talk about Rosie Lee. In all honesty, we don’t fully know what it means but I think that's why we love it so much.
