James Jannard, known as Jim to his friends, has an impressive portfolio of properties, including homes in Malibu and Newport Beach, two islands in Fiji, and another in the Pacific Northwest. His collection also includes vintage sunglasses and biking gear, a nod to his past as the founder of Oakley, which he sold in 2007 for $2.1 billion.
Jannard's latest addition is a stunning 18,000-square-foot home perched atop a cliff in Beverly Hills' Trousdale neighborhood. The area’s strict one-story building limit ensures unobstructed views of Los Angeles, from Downtown to the ocean. Inspired by Stonehenge, the fortress-like home, designed by iDGroup, is built with exposed concrete and aluminum.
Architect Jeff Vance recalls that Jannard, an easy-going client, allowed the design team freedom to dream. Despite taking five years to complete, the bold vision—a high-tech aesthetic with custom metal fixtures, sweeping city views, and a monumental structure—was clear from the start. The layout is simple: an open living space flanked by service areas and bedrooms, with 96 oversized columns replacing traditional walls. Acoustic panels ensure a cozy feel despite the home’s scale.
Visitors are greeted by a breathtaking view upon entry—past the central lounge and infinity pool, the entire Los Angeles basin stretches out to the horizon, enhanced by a retractable glass partition. The effect is nothing short of spectacular.
