For David Aguilar, LEGO was never just a toy, it was the start of something bigger. Nicknamed Hand Solo, the bioengineering graduate made headlines at 18 when he built the world’s first functional LEGO prosthetic arm, earning a Guinness World Record in 2017. But his work didn’t stop there.
In 2021, Aguilar built a custom LEGO prosthetic for eight-year-old Beknur Zhanibekuly from Strasbourg, France, who was born with underdeveloped limbs. Traditional prosthetics weren’t an option due to his small limb size, but Aguilar saw an opportunity to create something tailor-made. As he built the arm, Beknur watched on, and when asked about the colours, he grinned: “I think they look perfect!”

Once completed, Beknur wasted no time testing it out, quickly getting to grips with its movement. Seeing his excitement, Aguilar described the moment as “immense joy and happiness.” That same year, he set two more Guinness World Records with the eMK-Beknur model—the first functional foot-controlled LEGO prosthetic arm and the first LEGO prosthetic arm with a stylus.
