Aviva Studios Hosts New Exhibition where Football meets Contemporary Art
Manchester International Festival’s latest exhibition, Football City, Art United, opens at Aviva Studios and brings together legends of football and luminaries of the art world. Co-curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Juan Mata, and Josh Willdigg, the show builds on their 2023 collaboration and asks: what happens when the worlds of sport and art collide?
The exhibition features contributions from artists including Paul Pfeiffer, Philippe Parreno, Ryan Gander, Rose Wylie and Jill Mulleady, alongside football icons like Eric Cantona, Edgar Davids, Ella Toone and Lotte Wubben-Moy. Highlights include a new work by Mulleady, inspired by a childhood meeting with Maradona in Buenos Aires. Blurring the lines between performance, memory, and fandom, Football City, Art United celebrates the shared drama, storytelling, and passion that drive both disciplines
