Loving this direction from Nothing. We’ve been in conversation with them for a while now, and they’re taking a truly thoughtful approach that’s refreshing to see.
Co-creation is at the core of Nothing’s ethos. While the Phone (2a) Plus Community Edition is their largest community-led project to date, Nothing has been working alongside its community in everything from software development to governance. Last year, they even introduced a Community Board Observer, giving an elected community member a voice at Board of Directors meetings.
Winners Astrid Vanhuyse & Kenta Akasaki, Andrés Mateos, Ian Henry Simmonds, and Sonya Palma teamed up with Nothing’s Design Studio, Creative, Brand, and Marketing teams in London to refine their ideas, bringing the new Phone (2a) Plus Community Edition to life—a unique glow-in-the-dark twist on the original.
Stage 1 – Hardware Design
Astrid Vanhuyse & Kenta Akasaki worked with Nothing’s Design Director Adam Bates and CMF Designer Lucy Birley, pushing the “Phosphorescence” concept. With green-tinted phosphorescent finishes on the back, the phone has a subtle, power-free glow that charges with daylight—a nice nod to Nothing’s design philosophy.
Stage 2 – Wallpaper Design
Building off the hardware, Andrés Mateos created the “Connected Collection” of wallpapers, a mix of AI and digital design that turned four planned designs into six. Together with Software Design Director Mladen M Hoyss and Designer Ken Giang, this collection brings a nice, community-inspired touch.
Stage 3 – Packaging Design
Ian Henry Simmonds gave Nothing’s minimalist packaging a new twist with the “Less is More” concept, featuring a bold macro-crop design with reflective elements that glow in dark spaces. It pairs perfectly with the phosphorescent hardware for an immersive unboxing experience.
Stage 4 – Marketing Campaign
Sonya Palma tied it all together with her campaign, “Find your light. Capture your light.” This message, crafted with Nothing’s Creative Team, draws from Nothing’s early brand ethos of “pure instinct” and includes a film and digital assets that invite users to discover their own inner light. In the latest twist of his decade-long feud with Anish Kapoor, artist Stuart Semple has legally changed his name to Anish Kapoor. Known for his relentless satire around Kapoor’s exclusive rights to Vantablack the “world’s blackest black”. Semple announced the change in a newsletter titled I’ve Just Changed My Name, saying, “Just to let you know, I legally changed my name to Anish Kapoor today. Hopefully, I can now get ahold of that Vantablack and share it with you all. Love, Anish.”
