Sotheby’s is set to auction its first-ever piece of art created by a humanoid robot, Ai-Da, on October 31. The artwork A.I. God. Portrait of Alan Turing (2024), is a portrait of the legendary mathematician, made using a mix of AI algorithms and a robotic arm, along with cameras in Ai-Da’s eyes. Created by Aidan Meller, Ai-Da is more than just a typical AI—she’s a fully functioning humanoid robot artist with a creative edge.
This isn’t just another AI-generated artwork; Ai-Da brings a physical presence to the art world, something we’ve never seen before. Meller highlights the importance of the piece, noting how AI is rapidly changing the world and art’s role in discussing these shifts. The fact that this work is going under the hammer at Sotheby’s makes it even more groundbreaking.
According to Sotheby’s head of digital art, Michael Bouhanna, there’s a lot of buzz around this one, especially from collectors who live at the crossroads of art and tech. That demand has influenced its pre-sale estimate in a big way.
The portrait was first shown at the AI for Good Global Summit at the UN in Geneva back in May, and will now be joined by works from other top digital artists like Refik Anadol, PAK, Xcopy, and DesLucrece at Sotheby’s digital art sale on October 31.
